Kilkenny filmmaker crowdfunding for minimalist style drama with this female led production

Writer-director Emily McGee has been involved in theatre and film since the age of six years old. She is currently a student at the National Film School, IADT in Dublin. She spent seven years as a member of Kilkenny Youth Theatre, and credits much of her writing and directing style to this experience. She finds herself creating her latest work with fellow members of the youth theatre, as her upcoming short 'Sapling' is starring Kilkenny native Letiesha Redmond and has Niall Boland as part of the art department. They appeared in plays such as 'There is Only Now', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Alice in Wonderland' and more together. The three are excited to be working together again on the film.
Sapling follows the story of a complex father-daughter relationship, as thirteen-year-old Mia attempts to navigate that strange liminal space between childhood and adulthood. The film's dialogue is in both Irish and English to capture the authenticity of modern Irish culture, and also to be used as a creative tool to illustrate connection or lack of connection between the characters.
Emily is a promising young director, her last short film C*nsored (2019), was selected for the 31st Galway Film Fleadh, an Academy Award qualifying festival. She has also received mentorship from Academy Award winning directors such as Jim Sheridan and Martin Strange-Hansen. Her films' style can be described as minimalist realism, combined with the experimental and surrealism. Some influences on her work have been Céline Sciamma, Lynne Ramsay, David Lynch and Viktor Kossakovsy.
Emily has partnered up with young female producers Aisha Bolaji, co-founder of the GALPAL Collective and Katie Lee Lynch, producer for the BAFTA recognised female youth film festival Her International Film Festival, to bring her vision to light. The team are currently crowdfunding to bring the world of Sapling to life.
