Kilkenny GAA and Kilkenny Recreation & Sports Partnership (KRSP) are working together to develop opportunities in GAA Clubs in Kilkenny for children with additional needs.

To date, several clubs have embraced this, which means that opportunities for children with a disability are increasing in their local GAA clubs in Kilkenny.

Sport Inclusion Development Officer with KRSP, Seamus Nugent and Games Development Coordinator with Kilkenny GAA, Nathen Culleton are driving this in clubs and are available to assist interested clubs in terms of setting up an inclusive section in your club and the benefits of being an inclusive club.

Some supports are also available for clubs and to date Kilkenny Recreation and Sports Partnership have provided Autism in Sport and Disability Inclusion Training for six clubs who have taken the step to becoming inclusive.

It is wonderful to see Kilkenny GAA clubs embracing the motto of the GAA – Where we all Belong by becoming inclusive GAA Clubs and including all members of their local communities.

If you are interested in setting up an inclusive section in your GAA club call Seamus (KRSP) on 087-3567884 or email [email protected] or Nathen (GAA) on 085-8137618 or email nathen.culleton.gpo. [email protected].

All-Stars programme is an initiative run by many GAA clubs across Ireland.

This programme allows children living with additional needs to access the same amenities as their neuro-typical peers.

Some parents have spoken of how they never envisaged their child playing team sports.

Every child, regardless of abilities and extra needs, should be awarded the opportunity to access team sports and with almost six regional centres in Kilkenny in 2025, we want to let parents know that they shouldn't be too far away from a venue.

In 2023, we had one inclusion team, the strides made in the last 2 years highlights the great work being done by KRSP and Kilkenny GAA in making team sports accessible to all kids in our community.

Saddle Up Down Syndrome

When it comes to leading the way, Danesfort GAA isn’t just making an impact on the pitch but in the community too.

As the first GAA club to introduce the All-Stars initiative, Danesfort created a space where children with additional needs can enjoy Gaelic games alongside their siblings and peers.

The fun, laughter, and inclusivity seen every Monday evening at 6.30pm is testament to what community spirit is all about.

This initiative is growing across the county, and hopefully, it will go nationwide soon!

In that same spirit of inclusion and community, we’re delighted to bring back Saddle Up for Down Syndrome for another year!

After last year’s incredible success, we’re gearing up for an even bigger and better cycle on May 11th, starting from Danesfort GAA pitch.

It’s the only cycle where you might actually put on weight, thanks to the top-quality food, legendary hospitality, and unbeatable craic!

And here’s the best part—for every €1 raised through entry fees and donations, the Z Zurich Foundation will match it.

That means double the impact for Down Syndrome Kilkenny, helping to provide vital support for children and families.

So whether you’re cycling, sponsoring, or just spreading the word, get involved! Sign up today on Eventbrite, and let’s ride together for a fantastic cause.
