Kilkenny hurler’s curious link to Wexford priest revealed after Leinster triumph

The last Kerry native to win a Leinster Senior Hurling Championship medal was Fr Martin Casey who won two Leinster Senior Hurling Championships with Wexford in 1976 and 1977
History was made on Sunday as the Kilkenny senior hurling team beat Galway to win the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship.
It was the county's sixth Leinster title in-a-row, and the 77th provincial title overall.
Another little nugget of history made on the day was revealed by St Brendan's Hurling Club in Kerry, the former club of current Kilkenny player and Kerry native, Fionán Mackessy.
On social media, the club noted: "Congratulations to Fionan Mackessy and the Kilkenny team and management on winning the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship today, defeating Galway and completing six in-a-row Leinster titles.
"The last Kerryman to win a Leinster Senior Hurling Championship medal was Causeways Fr Martin Casey who won two Leinster Senior Hurling Championships with Wexford in 1976 and 1977."
Mackessy has been selected as a Joe McDonagh Cup All-Star over the past five seasons in-a-row but made the switch to Kilkenny late last year.
