A Kilkenny woman recently celebrated her graduation from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government alongside her family.

Doireann Breathnach (Walsh), who lives in Thomastown, is a past pupil of Bennettsbridge National School and Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny. By her own admission, she was ‘by no means an A student’ during her school years, making her achievements at Harvard all the more meaningful.

As part of her studies, Doireann completed a programme focused on leadership, decision science and the practical application of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. In recognition of her outstanding academic performance, she was awarded the prestigious Littauer Award for Academic Excellence, one of the school's highest honours.

Doireann was joined in Boston for the graduation celebrations by her parents, Jim and Eileen; her sisters, Bébhinn and Keelin; her cousins, Niall and Christen; and her aunt and uncles, Marie, Liam, Bredeen and Helen. She was also supported throughout the programme by her loving partner, Amir Khan.

The graduation ceremony brought together students from around the world, with the commencement address delivered by Irish-American comedian Conan O'Brien. The ceremony marked the conclusion of an intensive year of study at one of the world's leading public policy and leadership institutions, where Doireann was awarded a Master of Public Administration degree.

Reflecting on her time at Harvard, Doireann hopes her experience serves as a reminder that academic success is not determined by where you begin, but by curiosity and a willingness to embrace new challenges.
