Man in court over assault in Kilkenny housing estate

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with a serious assault in a housing estate in Kilkenny City on Sunday.
Declan Foley, 19 Station House, Weir View, Castlecomer Road, Kilkenny is charged with assault causing harm at Weir View, Castlecomer Road, Kilkenny on September 24.
Detective Garda Mark Wall said that the defendant had made no reply after caution. The detective told the court that it is alleged that on Sunday night the injured party rang gardaí to report an assault and subsequently became unresponsive in hospital. The garda said that the injured party had sustained a head injury and is in a critical condition.
Solicitor Chris Hogan made a bail application on behalf of his client. Gardaí objected due to the seriousness of the charge and outlined the allegation.
Detective Gda Wall said that gardaí had been called to the home of the injured party at Station House, Weir View, Castlecomer Road, Kilkenny on Sunday night. When gardaí arrived at the scene they met with the injured party who said that he had been assaulted and was holding a towel to his head and there was blood coming from his head.
The injured party was taken by ambulance to hospital and gardaí were subsequently told that he had ‘taken a turn’ and is being treated at Beaumont Hospital.
Judge Marie Keane granted bail to Mr Foley on his own bond of €200 subject to conditions including that he reside at a named address given to the court, that he is not to return to Station House, Weir View, unless accompanied by a member of An Garda Síochana, to sign on three times a week at Kilkenny Garda Station, to obey a curfew and that he undertake not to interfere with witnesses.
The judge remanded the defendant on bail for DPP’s directions to appear before Kilkenny District Court on October 23.
