Mining solidarity can still be seen in North Kilkenny

From this week's Castlecomer Notes
Until its closure in 1969, a weekly contribution of six pence towards Castlecomer District Hospital was deducted from all miners pay packets at the Deerpark Mines.
Times were hard all round at the time especially for the hospital, but the mining fraternity dug deep to ensure the facility remained open.
That solidarity and commitment has never wavered down through the years.
The recent contribution to the Friends of Castlecomer District Hospital from the family of former miner the late Mick Brennan Roe (RIP), Maryville is a welcome continuation of that solidarity.
