Minister Dara Calleary travelled to Kilkenny, last week, marking a significant milestone for the local community and the wider region.
The project, supported by the Community Centres Investment Fund and the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, alongside contributions from Kilkenny County Council and the local community, has delivered a modern, energy-efficient, inclusive space that will serve generations to come.Speaking at the opening, Minister Calleary highlighted the importance of the investment. “The works completed here in Urlingford have upgraded the internal facilities and transformed the energy efficiency of the building through the installation of solar panels which will assist the Community into the future with energy costs. The Community Centre Investment Fund continues to transform communities nationwide, both urban and rural, through the provision of accessible, inclusive and welcoming facilities that bring young and old together.”
Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr. Mary Hilda Cavanagh, described the project as a powerful example of community collaboration and vision. “This project is about much more than just bricks and mortar,” she said.
“It reflects the strong sense of community, pride of place, and the shared ambition of the people of Urlingford. Through dedication, co-operation, and hard work, a vision has been brought to life that will benefit the town for many years.”
Cllr Cavanagh paid particular tribute to the Urlingford Town Team for their leadership and commitment, noting the “countless hours, often behind the scenes that were invested in bringing the project to completion.”
She also acknowledged the role of funding supports and the ongoing commitment of Kilkenny County Council in helping to deliver vital infrastructure in rural communities.
The upgraded centre includes improved internal facilities and enhanced energy efficiency measures, ensuring it is fit for purpose as a modern community hub. It will provide a welcoming space for a wide range of activities including social events, educational programmes, and community services.
“Facilities like this are essential to sustaining vibrant rural communities,” Cllr. Cavanagh added. “They create spaces where people can come together, where ideas can grow, and where connections across generations are strengthened.”
Chair of Urlingford Town Team Dympna Hayes said: “While today marks the end of a labour that has taken almost three years to complete it also marks the beginning of a new era for Urlingford. We are counting on the continued support of all of you - our local community, Kilkenny County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development - to ensure that this Community Centre will serve Urlingford for decades to come.”
