Last Sunday, Storm Ashley may have raged her wings across the country, causing many events to be cancelled, triggered power outages and flooded all before it. However Athletics Leinster stayed strong and held the Leinster Cross Country Championships in a sun-drenched but blustery Dunboyne. As the day progressed the winds became wilder but thankfully the event went off without a hitch and resulted in some phenomenal performances for Kilkenny athletes. There were individual wins for David Williams (Kilkenny City Harriers) in the u20 men’s and Tom Doherty (St Josephs) in the boys u12. The girls u18 county team were the leading u18 county taking the gold. The day’s racing started with the girls u12 where Kate Kelly (KCH) last year’s All-Ireland silver medalists was keen to have as good a race this year as last. Racing over 2000m the Kilkenny girls maintained their positions within the top twelve for the entire race. Kelly moved ahead to join a group of five athletes. Out front Fianaith King (Dunleer) dominated the race. A final surge from home saw Kelly being dropped from the top three. However, behind her Orla O’Keeffe was racing home for eights place with her clubmate Abigail Hunt taking tenth. Kilkenny City Harriers led by Kelly took the bronze club medals. The county finished in 4th place, with the top four counties qualifying for the All-Ireland’s in Enniskillen next month. To see Tom Doherty (St Josephs) lead the field after 200m of the boys u12 race was no surprise. Doherty completely dominated the county championships, decimating the fields in bothplaceholder image
