AN EIGHT-MONTH prison sentence was handed down to a defendant who admitted burglary, handling stolen property and a number of thefts.

Tahar Naaman, 24 Skeough, Callan, Co Kilkenny admitted the offences which took place at various locations around Kilkenny City on August 2 and 3, 2025.

The court heard that on the date in question gardaí received a report of a burglary, handling stolen property and getting into a car without authority at Aylesford, Green’s Hill, Kilkenny  on August 3, 2025.

The court heard that on August 3 the defendant was observed leaving the property with a suitcase which was stolen from a shed. The defendant also stole power tools, cash, alcohol and cigarettes with a value of €864 and was also observed interfering with a car. The defendant also admitted stealing to Rayban sunglasses and sportswear from another vehicle  in the Green Hills area of Kilkenny City on a date unknown between August 2 and 3.  The defendant also admitted theft from another vehicle on a date unknown between August 2 and 3  at Michael Street, Kilkenny and to stealing a laptop, pedal cycle and other property with an estimated value of €2140.

The defendant also made admissions to gardaí and said that the stolen property was at his address and pleaded guilty to handling stolen property at Skeaugh on August 5. Other goods, which were unaccounted for, with a value of €855 were also found at the address. The defendant admitted that these goods were stolen. In total the value of the stolen goods was €4,459.

Solicitor Alex Rafter told the court that when he was arrested the defendant told gardaí where the property was at an address in Callan. Mr Rafter said that at the time of the offences his client was trying to raise money for his brother who was in prison in Turkey.

All the stolen property was recovered.

Mr Rafter outlined to the court that his client is an asylum seeker and is now living and working in Letterkenny.

"This was not a sophisticated or well thought out plan, he was always going to get caught,” he added.
