Year in Review on Kilkenny Live

From vital infrastructure projects to civic honours and business success, May delivered a lot in Kilkenny.

A significant chapter in regional connectivity opened in May as a new pedestrian and sustainable transport bridge was swung into place over the River Suir, linking South Kilkenny and Waterford.

Community appreciation was on full display in May when Father Jim Murphy received an unexpected honour at a Sunday service.

Mayor of Kilkenny, Andrew McGuinness surprised the long-serving priest with a Mayoral Award, acknowledging his over fifty years of dedication his vocation.

Celebrations of a different kind were held at Laharts Kilkenny, where Volkswagen owners turned out in force for a special VW 75th anniversary day.

Kilkenny’s business and hospitality scene also shone this month as Arán Artisan Bakery and Bistro was named the Leinster Winner for Best Contemporary Irish Cuisine at the Irish Restaurant Awards 2025.

Another huge achiever this month was Kilkenny native Captain George O’Hara, who was honoured for his extraordinary four-decade aviation career.

A civic reception, hosted by Cathaoirleach Michael McCarthy, recognised O’Hara (Ryanair’s most senior pilot) as a proud local man from St Francis Terrace whose achievements continue to inspire.

Organ Donor Awareness Week took place in May too and one particular story caught the interest of the public - that of Derek Deegan.

Derek shared the moving story of his journey while awaiting a vital kidney transplant, and many readers took notice.

Also making the headlines was the Mother of Fair Love Special School, who celebrated their Debs in style and glamour.

However, the month wasn’t without disruption. A freak flooding incident struck the centre of Thomastown after a burst water pipe sent water surging through Market Street and Low Street.

Meanwhile, in political developments, Fianna Fáil TD Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere was appointed the party’s new Agriculture Spokesperson.
