There was an unusually poor turnout at last week’s AGM of St Canice’s Credit Union, prompting speculation that many members did not receive notice of the meeting and packs containing the annual report.

For environmental reasons, the Credit Union has increasingly moved away from postage in recent years, instead using email to correspond with many of its members. It’s understood that for a proportion of would-be attendees, emails with notice of the AGM were flagged as spam and so were not received.placeholder image

The meeting is usually very well attended, including via an online format during the pandemic, with a growing common bond area seeing membership grow in recent years. This was also the first opportunity for a physical, in-person meeting since the Covid era and organisers could reasonably have expected a strong turnout.

Instead, in Hotel Kilkenny’s Skyline Suite, which was comfortably arranged to accomodate over 250 people seated, a modest crowd of around 60 were sparsely dotted around the room. A number of those present said they had not received their invitation, and had heard about the meeting only by word of mouth and at short notice.
