'Spectator stand' amongst ambitious plans for two Kilkenny secondary schools

Planning applications lodged in relation to Christian Brothers College in Kilkenny City and Castlecomer Community School
Plans have been lodged for development at two local secondary schools via two separate planning applications in recent weeks.
The Board of Management of Christian Brothers College in Kilkenny City are seeking permission for the construction of a two-storey sports changing-room building with associated multi-functional area at first floor and a spectator stand addressing the recently permitted sports pitch.
Also being sought is a localised extension of the existing tarmacadam ball court area, the relocation of existing bike racks within the existing school site and all associated site development works at Dunningstown Road and Lousybush Lane, Loughmacask, Kilkenny City.
A decision is expected on this planning application by June 22, 2026.
Separately, the Board of Management of Castlecomer Community School are seeking planning permission for the construction of hurling ball walls, all weather surfacing, associated fencing and ball nets, associated drainage, site lighting and site works adjacent to existing sports playing areas.
According to a letter submitted with the application: “The proposed ball walls and all-weather Astroturf court will be located on and within the existing external basket ball courts area.
"These courts are not currently used by the school and basketball is played in the internal sports hall within the school. The proposed site is located adjacent to the existing playing fields and is accessed by the existing tarmacadam access road.”
A decision is expected on this planning application by June 21, 2026.
The decision timeframe for these applications may be extended.
