The rescue of Fenian prisoners to feature in Co Kilkenny lecture TONIGHT!
The lecture will be given by Niamh Hassett in Callan this evening (Friday)
A most interesting lecture will be held in the Christian Brothers Visitor Centre, Westcourt, Callan tonight (Friday) at 7.30pm. The lecture, 'The Rescue of the Fenian prisoners from Western Australia in 1876', will be given by Niamh Hassett, who gave a great lecture at the same venue last year on Conscience and Conspiracy in Callan, which was based on the Civil War period around Callan. Her contribution along with direct descendants of the period made it an invaluable and thought provoking evening.
This is the very gripping story of how the Fenians in the United States bought a whaling boat and sailed it halfway around the world to rescue six Fenian prisoners who were serving life sentences in Fremantle jail in Western Australia. It was a top secret mission and was carried out with amazing competence and courage.
No doubt the lecture hosted by the wonderful Callan Heritage society will command lots of interest. All are welcome.
