'They'd mow you down' - concern for pedestrians at Kilkenny crossing

The issue was raised at a recent meeting of Kilkenny City Municipal District
A Kilkenny councillor has raised concerns for pedestrians who use the pedestrian crossing at Green's Bridge.
Cllr Maria Dollard, who has since been appointed Deputy Mayor, raised the issue after a council works update at a recent meeting of Kilkenny City Municipal District.
Cllr Dollard welcomed the work being done by the local authority, saying that 'lots of people are commenting about how nice Kilkenny looks', before raising concern about this particular crossing.
"In relation to traffic at Green's Bridge, they'd mow you down," she said.
Of particular concern for Cllr Dollard were 'the pedestrians who use the crossing'.
COURTESY CROSSING
It's not the first time in recent years that the topic of crossings around Green's Bridge have been discussed.
Back in 2023, there was debate in the council chamber when it was confirmed no plans were in place to reinstate the courtesy crossing at the other side of Green's Bridge.
At the time, Director of Services at Kilkenny County Council, Tim Butler, told elected members that the local authority are examining other options to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the road.
He stated that the courtesy crossing that was in place on the road was causing confusion between some motorists and pedestrians on the issue of right of way, leading to hazardous situations.
