Wheels put in motion for Kilkenny bus service improvements

A public consultation has been launched
The National Transport Authority (NTA) has launched a public consultation seeking feedback on proposed bus service improvements along the Graignamanagh – Kilkenny corridor and the Urlingford – Thurles bus corridor.
These consultations aim to improve connectivity and increase bus service frequency in the region and remain open until 5pm on Friday, November 15.
Service Enhancements
The proposed improvements focus on increasing bus frequency and improving access to reliable public transport for rural residents. These changes will provide better connections to key destinations in the region.
Graignamanagh-Kilkenny route: The proposals include plans to introduce a new seven-day week service between Graignamanagh and Kilkenny, which will serve Borris, Goresbridge, Gowran and Clara. The proposed service will operate up to four return journeys a day, offering enhanced service levels and extended operating hours.
The proposed service will also improve connections to other services in the area including Routes 4, 881, 882 and 887.
Urlingford-Thurles route: The proposed enhancement includes plans for a new seven-day week service, with four services a day. The service will operate between Urlingford and Thurles, providing connections with Johnstown, Crosspatrick, Templetuohy, Moyne and Thurles Train Station.
Under the plans, the proposed service will offer improved access to other local connections including Routes 393, 812, 828, 850 and 858 as well as rail services available from Thurles Train Station.
Integrated Ticketing and Accessibility
The new services will be integrated with the TFI Go app for convenient journey planning. Also, Free Travel Passes will be accepted on the new services.
The NTA is also working to introduce accessible vehicles while working with local authorities to improve bus stop infrastructure to ensure the service meets the needs of all passengers.
Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan
These proposed enhancements are part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan, a national initiative aimed at strengthening rural public transport as part of the Transport for Ireland Network (TFI). The plan, which is developed and funded by the National Transport Authority, is aligned with the goals of Project Ireland 2040 and the Climate Action Plan.
The NTA aims to begin implementing the proposed service enhancements by the end of 2025, subject to securing the necessary funding and resources.
