‘Are we going to put flyers on them?’ - Waterford parking boards haven’t worked in years

The issue was raised by Cllr Declan Barry at the May plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council
The electronic parking information boards in Waterford city haven’t worked in two years, a council meeting has heard.
The issue was raised by independent councillor Declan Barry at the May plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.
Cllr Barry said: “I’ve brought it up now since I came in two years ago. I’m looking at our parking information boards and I don’t know what we’re going to put up there.
“Are we going to put flyers on them or something because there’s been nothing on them for the last two years or so. Are there any plans to put them back into play?
“I know if I was a visitor coming into the city going over the Quay or coming across on the ferry or something like that, where would I park?”
“It doesn't tell me if there’s spaces available, it doesn’t tell me anything,” he concluded.
In response, Senior Engineer Gabriel Hynes said that the council does have plans to bring the noticeboards back into use.
Mr Hynes said: “We have had some electronic issues in the city with them. We have a contract in place to bring them back to working order.
“The main thing, as you rightly said, whatever approach you’re coming in you need to know if there’s spaces available in one of the car parks or the other.
“There’s a bit of technology involved, obviously censors involved in the car parks. We also need to contact the private car park owners as well so we get a holistic approach to all the car parking in the municipal area of the city.”
He concluded by reiterating the importance of visitors to the city knowing where there are car parking spaces available.
