Calls for Waterford to call a halt to festive fireworks display for important reason

There is due to be a fireworks display in Dungarvan on Saturday, December 21
Waterford Animal Concern are calling on Waterford City and County Council to adopt an animal friendly approach to festivals in Waterford.
The organisation said that a fireworks display, due to be held this Saturday in Dungarvan, as part of the Féile Grianstad festive evening, places entertainment above the safety and well-being of animals.
According to the WAC, fireworks displays are not mere spectacles—they are traumatic events for animals.
"The deafening explosions and flashes of light instil terror in pets, farm animals, and wildlife alike," they said in a statement.
"Many frightened animals flee their homes, leading to road accidents, injuries, and even deaths."
John Tierney, Chairperson, Waterford Animal Concern, says, “By hosting a fireworks display, Waterford City and County Council are creating an unnecessary animal welfare issue.
"The fireworks element of the festive evening could be replaced by a laser show or a drone display that can still fill the night sky with vibrant colours, but without the loud noises that unsettle animals.
"These modern solutions prove that festivals can be joyous without leaving a trail of frightened and injured animals in their wake.
"It is time for Waterford City and County Council to set a humane standard for local festivals—one that respects all living beings who share this community."
Waterford Animal Concern says that all animals want for Christmas is a silent night.
