The NTA has announced the roll-out of the payment method on all TFI Local Link services in Waterford

Contactless payments have been introduced on Local Link bus services across Waterford.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has announced the roll-out of the payment method on all TFI Local Link services in the county.

Passengers can now tap and pay using debit and credit cards, as well as digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, making travel more convenient.

TFI Leap cards, cash payments and Free Travel Cards continue to be accepted across all eligible TFI Local Link services.

The move comes after a successful pilot scheme in Cavan and Monaghan and subsequent rollouts across a range of other counties, including Kilkenny, Tipperary and Wexford.

The measure forms part of the NTA’s ongoing bid to modernise public transport fare systems nationwide, with a particular focus on improving accessibility and enhancing the passenger experience in rural and regional communities.

Edmund Betagh, TFI Local Link Programme Manager at the NTA, said: “Introducing contactless payments in Waterford is another major step toward making public transport accessible and stress-free.

“We’ve seen very positive uptake in other regions throughout the country, which demonstrates a clear demand for fast, secure and practical payment options.

“As we continue expanding this network-wide, our goal remains to make public transport a truly attractive option for communities across Ireland.”

Damien Tobin, General Manager at TFI Local Link Waterford, added: “We are delighted to give our passengers across Waterford the added convenience of contactless payments.

“The feedback from other counties has been overwhelmingly positive, with passengers welcoming the simplicity and convenience of paying with a card or mobile device.

“This enhancement makes travelling easier for both regular customers and visitors, while supporting our continued commitment to keeping communities across County Waterford connected.”
