A petition has been launched following the removal of a bus stop near Grange on the N25

Two public representatives have raised concerns over the removal of a bus stop in County Waterford.

Sinn Féin TD Conor McGuinness and Cllr Kate O’Mahoney have launched a petition following the removal of the Route 40 bus stop near Grange on the N25.

The petition states: “The removal of this stop represents a significant blow to rural connectivity in West Waterford and will have serious consequences for those who depend on public transport to access employment, education, healthcare, and essential services.

“The Grange stop is an essential transport link serving a wide range of community needs. It provides vital access to hospitals and medical services in Cork, Waterford, Dungarvan, and beyond for those attending appointments and receiving treatment.

“It supports students travelling to colleges, universities, and training centres, helping them pursue educational opportunities.

“It also enables workers to commute to their jobs and allows residents to access shopping, social activities, and public services.”

The petition goes on to outline the impacts that the removal of the bus stop has had for the local community.

“The loss of this service has increased rural isolation, particularly for older people, young people, those with disabilities, and households without access to private transport.

“It has forced more people to rely on cars at a time when national and local policies are encouraging greater use of public transport and reduced dependence on private vehicles.”

The two public representatives acknowledged the concerns around safety at the bus stop location, but cited the importance of the bus stop.

“We recognise that concerns have been raised regarding road safety on the N25.

“However, local communities should not be penalised for the failure to deliver long-promised road safety improvements.

“For years, residents and public representatives have highlighted the need for investment and safety upgrades in this area.

“Removing a vital public transport stop is not a substitute for addressing infrastructure deficiencies.”

They concluded by outlining their concern at the lack of public consultation that took place before the bus stop was removed.

“We are also deeply concerned by the lack of meaningful consultation with the communities affected.

“Decisions that have such a significant impact on daily life should not be made without proper engagement with local residents and stakeholders.

“Rural communities deserve safe infrastructure, reliable public transport, and a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their daily lives.

“We urge all responsible agencies to act now to reinstate the Bus Éireann Route 40 stop in Grange.”

The petition, which was posted on Change.org, has over 200 verified signatures at the time of writing.

It has been addressed to Transport Infrastructure Ireland, Bus Éireann, the National Transport Authority, the Minister for Transport, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Waterford City and County Council, and local public representatives.
