The owners of a puppy have been left shocked after it was “attacked” by a “massive dog” in the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford.

A female member of the family detailed the alleged incident in a post to a local Facebook group on Tuesday night.

She wrote: “Today, what was supposed to be a beautiful family walk with our beloved puppy in the forest near the Comeragh Mountains turned into our worst nightmare.

“Our beautiful 10-month-old Cavapoo puppy was attacked by a massive dog whose owner was unable to control it, even though the dog was on a leash.

“Our little puppy was also on his leash, simply enjoying a walk with his family. He did absolutely nothing wrong.”

The woman continued by outlining the extent of the injuries sustained by the puppy.

“The attack was horrific. The other dog grabbed our little boy, leaving him with life-threatening injuries and broken ribs.

“We rushed him to the emergency vet, where we received the most heartbreaking news. Our puppy needs surgery, but the vet has warned us that he might not survive the operation.

“Without surgery, he could bleed to death. We don't even know if our beautiful little boy will come home again.”

She went on to describe the impact that the attack has had on her household.

“Our 10-year-old daughter has been crying for hours. She is completely traumatised by what she witnessed. We are all in shock and absolutely heartbroken.

“Even our cat is lying in our puppy's bed, waiting for his best friend to come home. That breaks our hearts even more.”

The woman thanked a man who stopped and came to the assistance of the family.

She also pleaded with those who own large dogs to make sure other animals and people are safe around them.

She continued: “Our puppy is only 10 months old. He is part of our family, loved beyond words, and he deserves to feel safe on a simple walk.

“No family should have to experience something like this. No child should have to witness their beloved pet being attacked so violently.”

The woman concluded by saying that the family is praying that their puppy makes a full recovery.
