Final approval has been given for the extensions of two schools in County Waterford
Waterford Fine Gael TD and Minister of State John Cummins has announced that the two schools have been granted approval to proceed to the construction phase.
Work will “soon commence” on the building of eight special education tuition rooms and a further two mainstream classrooms at St Mary’s National School in Ballygunner.
Approval has also been granted for the delivery of two special education classrooms at Fenor National School.
Minister Cummins said: “This is fantastic news for both Scoil Naomh Mhuire Ballygunner and Fenor National School and I know that these developments will make a tangible difference to both schools and the wider communities going forward.
“I would like to thank my Fine Gael colleague, Minister for Education, Hildegarde Naughton TD and her predecessor Helen McEntee TD for their attention and engagement with me in respect of these projects.
“I also want to acknowledge the school principals, staff and boards of management at both schools.”
Minister Cummins said the announcement is an important milestone that will allow students in both Ballygunner and Fenor to avail of the education they deserve.
“This is an area I am deeply passionate about, and I have consistently worked with schools, parents and the minister to ensure that Waterford is prioritised when it comes to projects of this nature.
“The new tuition rooms at Scoil Naomh Mhuire and designated classrooms at
Fenor NS will provide a designated environment where students can learn and flourish.
“The additional mainstream classes at Scoil Mhuire will also significantly help to meet the growing demands on the school as the area continues to grow in terms of population.
“I look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition in time ahead and know they will have a lasting positive impact for generations to come.”
The Department of Education has provided funding for the projects under the Additional School Accommodation Scheme.
