Council open to making space for speed van on Airport Road on the outskirts of the city

Members of An Garda Síochána “have issues” with a proposed speed limit reduction on a busy road in County Waterford, a council meeting has heard.

Sinn Féin councillor Pat Fitzgerald spoke on the subject of the Airport Road at the April meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District.

Cllr Fitzgerald said: “There’s quite a lot of councillors that have requested the end of the road be reduced to 60km/h.

“I believe the gardaí have issues with it because there’s nowhere to pull in to actually police it.

“I was just wondering as we will be doing resurfacing and drainage works on that road, could we make a spot where they could pull in safely to check for speeding on that particular part of the road?”

In response, Paul Johnston, Senior Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, said that it was a “good suggestion” to make space for a speed van on the road.

He added that the council would take the suggestion on board.

Later in the meeting, Acting Director of Services Séan Dobbs provided an update on proposed roadworks that are set to take place in light of Waterford Airport’s imminent redevelopment.

Mr Dobbs said: “Just on the Airport Road, work is commencing with the developer in preparation for the required roadworks and the appointment of designers.”

He added that the council is “making progress” in its preparation for the roadworks.
