A young Waterford man who climbed Mount Everest last week has received a warm welcome home.

Adam Sweeney from Dunmore East was part of the Irish team who reached the world’s highest point on May 20.

At just 22-years-old, he became the youngest ever Irish person to summit Mount Everest.

Adam and his teammates received a warm welcome home upon their arrival in Dublin Airport on Saturday, May 23.

In a post on Facebook, the Dunmore man stated: “Back on Irish soil. It’s so good to be back, thank you for all the messages of support.

“It’s time for a big Irish fry, lots of sleep and family time!”

Tributes were paid to Adam at the May meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District.

Social Democrats councillor Mary Roche said: “Just to congratulate Adam Sweeney from Dunmore East, who at 22 years of age is the youngest Irish person to summit Everest.

“Adam is a member of the RNLI in Dunmore East, a very active lad and his family would be very well known in Dunmore East.

“So just to pass on our congratulations, it’s a massive achievement and something that’s brought great acknowledgement to Dunmore East and to Waterford through his fantastic achievements.”

Sinn Féin councillor Pat Fitzgerald said that climbing Everest was an “exceptional achievement”, whilst Fine Gael councillor Frank Quinlan said it was “phenonmenal”.

Adam was part of Team Ireland, which also included Jason Black (Donegal), Eanna McGowan (Dublin) and Pádraig O'Hora (Mayo).

The team were the first Irish group to summit Mount Everest since 2019.

Everest has been climbed 84 times by 65 Irish climbers (nine women and 56 men) since the first Irish success in 1993.
