There will be an increased number of car parking spaces at the new train station in Waterford city, a council meeting has heard.

Independent councillor Donal Barry raised the subject at the June plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr Barry said: “How many car parking spaces are over on the new railway station compared to what’s in the old one there?

“There’s people saying that there’s a reduction in the car parking spaces.”

In response, Senior Engineer Seán Dobbs clarified that there will actually be more car parking spaces at the new train station.

Mr Dobbs said: “In terms of car parking, so as part of the Harcourt Phase 1 Development, there will be 200 car parking spaces dedicated to the train station.

“At the moment in Plunkett Station, I think there are around 175 car parking spaces but that does include Irish Rail staff.

“In the new arrangement, the Irish Rail staff will continue to work in Plunkett Station, so that will take an element of the staff parking away from the new car park.”

He went on to outline other parking arrangements at the new train station, including a set down area and bicycle parking.

“There is about a 30/35 car set-down area at the new train station so that will be a 15/30 minute set down that will increase capacity as well fairly significantly.

“Then of course, there is disability parking and very significant bicycle parking on both sides of the train station.”
