Waterford Airport developer William Bolster has provided an update on the redevelopment of the airport.
Mr Bolster was speaking to Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú in a video posted to her social media pages.
Speaking at the airport, MEP Ní Mhurchú said that “the works have started behind us and all around us”.
Mr Bolster then outlined the status of the works that are underway at the airport.
He stated: “We had a great sod turning, got a great turnout and great reaction as well and this has accumulated into, as you can see, with machines on site.
“We’ve started on the south east corner of the runway, but that’s all I suppose preparation for the overall works.
“These guys are in now for the next 25 to 30 weeks to complete [the works].”
To this, MEP Ní Mhurchú replied: “It’s very exciting and what I can see is an awful lot of top soil being stripped back and it’s been stockpiled.”
Mr Bolster explained that these works form part of phase one of the overall construction project.
“The phase one of that is the top soil stripping and then we go into ground stabilisation, then we go into the surfacing and away we go,” he stated.
Mr Bolster also told the Fianna Fáil MEP that €6 million worth of plant and machinery had been delivered to the site in the last two weeks.
As part of the project, the airport’s runway will be lengthened to 2,287 metres and widened to 45 metres to accommodate larger commercial jet aircraft.
