The Department of Transport has announced the allocation of €5.53 million to repair Waterford roads

Millions of euro have been allocated to repair roads in County Waterford damaged by Storm Chandra.

The Department of Transport has today announced the allocation of €5.53 million to repair local roads damaged by the storm in January.

In total, over €40 million has been allocated for the repairing of damaged roads across the country.

Waterford received the third most funding of any county, behind only Wexford (€13.49 million) and Wicklow (€10.72 million).

The funding announcement was welcomed by Waterford Fine Gael TD and Minister of State John Cummins.

Minister Cummins said: “I’m delighted that Waterford will receive €5.53 million as part of a €40 million fund nationwide to help repair roads which were damaged extensively by Storm Chandra.

“The storm had a severe impact on many of our communities locally, and I have been engaging closely with our local Fine Gael councillors, who have consistently highlighted the need for this funding and strongly advocated for these repairs.

“I’m pleased that we have been able to deliver this investment for Waterford so that the necessary works can now take place.”

He went on to thank Waterford City and County Council for its role in repairing roads locally.

“I’d also like to thank Waterford City & County Council for their work in this space.

“Ground teams have been out in extremely adverse weather conditions to help lessen the severity of their impact.

“Their commitment and professionalism has helped to protect our local communities during this challenging period in the aftermath of Storm Chandra.

“I also want to acknowledge the collaboration between the Council, local volunteers and our emergency services whose collective efforts have made a real difference.”

After assessment in March 2026, approximately 130 roads nationwide were found to require complete reconstruction and over 440 had significant damage.

Several bridge structures were also damaged and made impassable.

The funding provided aims to assist the local authorities facing the most significant road damage as a result of Storm Chandra.
