'Negative response' from residents sparks call for more Active Travel surveys in Waterford

Mayor of Waterford Seamus Ryan spoke on the subject at the April meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District
A call has been made for more Active Travel surveys to be carried out in Waterford after one survey received a “negative response” from local residents.
The Mayor of Waterford, Labour councillor Seamus Ryan, spoke on the subject at the April meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District.
Mayor Ryan said: “I noticed that the council recently published the results of a recent Active Travel survey in the Tramore area which, by and large, showed a negative response from local residents.
“My request is that the same courtesy would be shown to the residents on the Inner Ring Road from the Kilbarry roundabout to the top of the Folly including Ursuline Court, Pearse Park, the residents in the Folly.
“That we would go door to door to get the support or otherwise of the residents of those estates, like we did in Tramore. It should be no different.”
In response, Paul Johnston, Senior Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, said that the results of the survey will be the subject of a workshop for councillors.
He continued: “I have to say I think we should be learning from our experiences in the past and I agree with your suggestion.”
Mr Johnston noted that the circumstances surrounding the two schemes are slightly different, but said the council executive would take the suggestion on board.
The Active Travel scheme proposed for the Inner Ring Road in Waterford city would see a two-way cycle lane constructed across a two kilometre stretch of road.
Mayor Ryan previously described it as “a disastrous proposal” and called for the plans to be withdrawn.
The council executive agreed to carry out a review of the scheme to assess the viability of the two-way cycle lane.
