Tributes have been paid to the teenage boy who died in a cycling accident in County Waterford yesterday.

16-year-old Shane O’Brien from Fermoy in County Cork was killed after he collided with a parked lorry at Ballygallane near Lismore.

The incident occurred at around 11am and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr O’Brien was a cyclist with CAMS Majaco and had only recently represented Ireland for the first time.

Cycling Ireland paid tribute to him in a post on social media.

A spokesperson for the organisation said: “Cycling Ireland is shocked and deeply saddened with the news of the tragic passing of junior rider Shane O'Brien.

“Shane, formerly of Fermoy CC and more recently with CAMS Majaco, was well known and loved in the cycling community.

“He recently made his national team debut at Course de la Paix in the Czech Republic and had shown great promise as an emerging talent.”

They went on to say that Mr O’Brien will be missed nearly by all who knew him.

“Shane will be missed dearly by all in the cycling community in Ireland.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates at this time of tragic loss. May he rest in peace.”

His body has been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed this collision to come forward.

Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N72 between Lismore and Cappoquin this morning between 10:30am and 11:15am are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dungarvan Garda Station on (058) 48600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Investigations are ongoing.
