Petrol was the top choice of fuel type among Waterford motorists

Thousands of new cars were registered in Waterford last year, new figures have revealed.

New research from 123.ie Insurance shows that there were 2,681 new cars registered in Waterford in 2025.

This works out at a rate of 2,105 for every 100,000 people, the fifth highest such rate in the country last year.

Petrol was the top choice of fuel type among Waterford motorists, with 768 such cars registered.

It was followed by electric with 478 cars registered, making up nearly 18 per cent of all new car registrations in the county.

To no surprise, Dublin is Ireland's car capital, with 53,033 new cars registered across the county in 2025.

Meanwhile, Cork was Ireland's second busiest county for new car registrations, with 14,285 new cars registered in 2025.

Kildare and Carlow occupied the two remaining spots above Waterford in the list, registering 5,783 and 2,201 new cars respectively.

123.ie Insurance analysed motorstats data from SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) covering new Irish car registrations across all 26 counties for the full year 2025.

Registration figures were adjusted for population using CSO Census 2022 data to produce a registration per 100,000 residents' figure for each county.

Electrified vehicles include pure electric, petrol electric hybrid, petrol plug-in hybrid, diesel electric hybrid and diesel plug-in hybrid variants.
