A ceremony will be held in Waterford city tomorrow to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The ceremony will take place at the gardens of Bishop’s Place on the Mall at 1:30pm on Friday afternoon.

Waterford City and County Council announced the event in a post on social media earlier this week.

A council spokesperson said: “The ceremony will provide an opportunity to remember and honour all those who lost their lives on 11 September 2001, as well as the families, friends and communities whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day.”

Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks which claimed the lives of over 2,900 people in the United States.

19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes to carry out targeted suicide attacks on a number of major landmarks.

It most famously saw the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City, which alone saw the deaths of 2,763 people.
