Gardaí in Waterford used an unmarked lorry to detect mobile phone use among drivers during a recent operation.

An Garda Síochána provided detail on the cross-county initiative in a post on their Facebook page.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Yesterday, members of the Waterford and Kilkenny Roads Policing Units conducted Operation Iompair, a road safety initiative aimed at detecting distracted driving and other road traffic offences.

“Operation Iompair utilises an HGV tractor unit alongside both marked and unmarked roads policing vehicles, providing officers with an elevated vantage point to identify dangerous driving behaviours.”

During the operation, a total of 51 offences were detected, including 46 mobile phone offences and five seatbelt offences.

The Garda spokesperson said that driver distraction remains a significant factor in road traffic collisions.

They concluded by urging all road users to stay focused, put the phone away, and always wear a seatbelt.
