Waterford TD David Cullinane calls for abolition of TV licence amid sale decreases

A Waterford TD has called for the abolition of the TV licence amid a decrease in the number of people paying the fee.
Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane made the call in a post on his Facebook page.
Deputy Cullinane said: “The TV licence should be abolished.
“Income is falling again, with €48 million raised from just under 300,000 licences sold in the first five months of this year, down massively on previous years.
“This tells its own story. People should not be dragged through the courts for refusing to pay €160 a year for a broken system.”
He concluded by again calling for the licence to be ‘scrapped’.
New figures have revealed that 299,373 licences were sold to the end of May, representing a four and a half per cent decrease on the same period last year.
In total, 768,000 licences were sold during 2025, which represented a three per cent decline on the 792,000 licences sold in 2024.
