A Waterford volunteer has been honoured for his 32 years of “outstanding” service to a local hospital.

Michael Rowe was honoured with a Mayoral Reception on Tuesday in recognition of his charity work in aid of St Patrick’s Hospital.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Liam Brazil, presented Michael with a certificate on behalf of Waterford City and County Council.

Originally from Grange, Mooncoin, Michael co-founded Friends of St Patrick’s in 1994 alongside his friend and former Waterford Crystal colleague, the late John O’Brien.

What began as a conversation between two friends about improving the lives of hospital patients has grown into an organisation that has raised well over €1 million for St Patrick’s Hospital.

Michael has served on the organisation’s board for 32 years, primarily as treasurer, dedicating his time and expertise to supporting the hospital and its patients.

The reception was an opportunity to thank Michael for his many years of voluntary service and to acknowledge the contribution of John O’Brien and everyone who has supported Friends of St Patrick’s over the years.

Fine Gael councillor Frank Quinlan said he was honoured to have the opportunity to attend the reception.

In a post on Facebook, Cllr Quinlan wrote: “It was an absolute honour to attend the Mayoral Reception this afternoon for Michael Rowe for his dedication serving on the Board of St Patrick’s Hospital, now known as the Waterford Residential Care Home, for 32 years .

“Michael was on the board voluntarily acting as treasurer helping to raise over €1 million which went towards the betterment of the residents, helping fund trips to various places throughout the year as well as providing equipment for them to use.

“The largest crowd I ever saw at a Mayoral Reception, which is a testament to the gentleman Michael is and the work he did for the community.”

Similarly, Fianna Fáil councillor Jason Murphy said the honour was “well deserved” for the “great St Paul’s man”.
