Siriki Dembele had put the home side ahead.

Ben Knight struck a second-half equaliser to earn Cambridge a 1-1 draw against Oxford at the Kassam Stadium.

Back-to-form Siriki Dembele had scored for the second game running to put the home side in front in the 15th minute.

Dembele failed to find the target last season but the winger struck a beauty against Burton and followed that up by firing home from just inside the area after a lay-off by Mark Harris.

However, Cambridge were rewarded for their strong start to the second half when Knight turned in Dominic Ball’s cutback with a clean left-footed shot low into the bottom corner on 57 minutes.

Aaron Ramsey’s Oxford suffered an early blow when midfielder Jamie McDonnell limped off injured, but they had the better of the first half as Harris twice went close.

Cambridge responded well in the second half with Shayne Lavery and Cathal Heffernan going close to giving them the lead, before Oxford finished the match strongly with Jake Eastwood saving Tyler Goodrham’s header one-handed to his right.
