Northampton lifted themselves out of the relegation zone with their first away win of the season, beating out-of-form Grimsby 2-0 at Blundell Park.

Connor Lemonheigh-Evans had a header cleared off the line for the Cobblers after he met Lee Evans’ free-kick to the back post, with Owen Dale having his follow-up shot diverted wide after a six-yard box scramble.

Matty Warhurst had two shots saved by Christy Pym in the first half before he then beat the Grimsby goalkeeper with a longer-distance strike in the 34th minute, firing with his right foot into the far bottom corner from the left channel.

Zach Jeacock then made strong stops from Iwan Morgan, Justin Amaluzor and Kieran Green to preserve Northampton’s first-half lead.

Jamie Walker struck the upright and Charles Vernam blazed over from close range soon after the break for the hosts, before Jon Guthrie knocked in a second for Northampton after 58 minutes.

Edon Pruti was then sent off for Grimsby just three minutes later, leaving the field on a stretcher having suffered a nasty injury in the process.
