Rugby star Brian O’Driscoll paid tribute to the young people of Derry at the annual Derry Credit Union 2010 Young People’s Awards at the City Hotel.
The Irish rugby captain, who was the special guest on the night, said he was honoured to have been asked to take part in the event in his role as an ambassador for the Credit Union movement throughout Ireland.
“The ethos of the credit union is something that sets it apart from other fi nancial institutions,” he said. “I particularly like credit union initiatives aimed at children such as why we are here tonight
“It is very important to involve children from a very young age in believing that their communities really matter. It is initiatives like the one we are taking part in tonight that remind us just how different credit unions are.
“Credit Unions have been giving something back to communities in Ireland for more than 50 years in Ireland and Derry Credit Union is certainly no exception.
“These young people awards are a novel and heartwarming way to recognise and honour the achievements of the young people of Derry city.
“They are an opportunity to reward determination and personal development of young people in many walks of life. Congratulations to all nominees and winners and the Derry Credit Union youth committee for making these awards happen.”
