Terry McGroarty performed the official ribbon-cutting ceremony noting that until now he “had not been on a beach in 25 years.”

Representatives from Donegal County Council (DCC), local councillors as well as sporting agencies were on hand to help celebrate this historic event, with the wheelchair to be known as the buggy.

“Special thanks to Michael Mc Garvey and Trudi O'Reilly of DCC for their efforts in arranging funding,” Lorraine McCafferty said on behalf of Friends Of Murvagh Beach. “Also, thank you to Martin McDevitt and Brian Carr of the Donegal Local Development Company (DLDC) for their help and guidance. Finally, a special word of thanks to Paul and Julie Dawson from Narin for their support in guiding the Friends of Murvagh Beach committee through the front-to-back process of arranging the buggy.

“Many thanks to a number of people who came along to try out the buggy namely Orlaith Walsh, Conor McGowan and Terry McGroarty.”

The buggy not only allows people with disabilities access to the beach but opens up opportunities for families to enjoy the beach together. The wheels on the buggy can be changed to a thinner set of wheels suitable for the forest.

While it is not recommended for the buggy to enter the water due to the buoyancy of the wheels, close to the water's edge or shallow water is deemed appropriate. There is also a hoist. The committee will work through the most efficient method of accepting bookings based on the volume of requests, anyone can call 087 6005002 and book an appointment to use the buggy. Simple paperwork will need to be completed before use for insurance purposes.

“Lastly, a special thank you to Michelle Travers who spearheaded the campaign to source the buggy for Murvagh,” Lorraine added. “Working diligently with representatives from the various government agencies as well as making trips to Narin Beach to speak with Paul and Julie, Michelle's determination led to this wonderful facility now being available for the local community to use. Simply life-changing!”
