The gathering in Dara’s memory was originally intended to be a surf paddle as part of the Intercounty Surf Contest taking place in Rossnowlagh at the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20. It was moved to Creevy Pier and the decision was made not to take to the water for safety reasons.
Dara’s life was intrinsically linked to the sea. He was a long time member, instructor and former Treasurer of Rossnowlagh Surf Club, and served for a time as both Secretary and Chairperson of Surfing Ireland. The annual Intercounty event in Rossnowlagh was particularly close to his heart.
Dara was also a keen swimmer, and he served as Station Officer at Malin Head Coast Guard Station.
His gentle, humble manner and positive, can-do attitude endeared him to all those whose lives he touched.
People from all walks of life came together in Creevy on Saturday afternoon to honour and remember Dara. Despite those present not being able to surf on the day, it was a fitting tribute to the man who for most of his life cut a familiar figure on the Creevy shore.
