In a region rich with musical talent, The Old Chapel Sessions provides something especially important — a safe, non-alcoholic, family-friendly performance space where original music is given full attention and respect. With a complete listening audience, the evening unfolded like a seated concert, allowing performers to share their work without competing against bar noise or distractions.

The night was hosted by local country artist Conor O’Donnell, who also provided professional lighting and sound, creating an intimate and atmospheric setting within the chapel venue.

The concept was inspired by a conversation between Maria McCormack of Over the West and Eirú, building on Over the West’s long-standing commitment to alcohol-free music events, including its annual Over the West Fest on Arranmore Island. The launch represents a significant step in strengthening grassroots music development in the Rosses and neighbouring communities.

Supported by MACE Local Funding, the event was attended by Bridie and Charlie Sharkey of MACE Dungloe, demonstrating strong local business support for community arts initiatives. Refreshments were served on the night, and a hamper draw added to the community spirit, with Bridget McGonagle announced as the winner.

The diverse line-up featured Conor O’Donnell, Breegeen Bonner, Maria McCormack, Yankton Carothers, Meabh Cannon, Owen Curran , Karen McLaughlin, Aidan O’Donnell, Ania Hornowski and High Frequency.

A standout moment came from Owen Curran, who performed three self-penned songs referencing the Rosses, showcasing a broad musical range from country to rock. Reflecting the inclusive ethos of the event, some artists took to the stage for the very first time, while others brought years of experience — all sharing the same supportive platform.

By creating a dedicated non-alcohol listening environment for original music, The Old Chapel Sessions is not only showcasing talent but actively nurturing it — an important cultural development for the Rosses, surrounding areas and the wider Donegal music community.

The next Old Chapel Sessions will take place on April 10th. Artists interested in performing can contact Fobairt na Rosann or Over the West Online Radio.
