Lough Derg: There were no ferries to the island itself but The Sanctuary of St Patrick is still an impressive sight from the shores of Lough Derg. According to legend St Patrick's Purgatory has been an ancient pilgrimage site since the fifth century when its said Christ showed St Patrick a cave on Station Island that was an entrance into purgatory, after apparently St Patrick grew tired of the scepticism of the Irish and had asked god to send him a signal.
