Knockalla Fort: Fort number four of the seven Napoleanic Martello forts along Lough Swilly, this time Knockalla Fort after already being to MacAmish, Dunree and Neds Point. This Fort was built in 1812 and armed with heavy guns from a French ship the Hoche, which was captured off the north coast as part of the 1798 Rebellion. The Fort is triangular with a tower and two walls with a moat and the cliff face, and you can just about make out Fort Dunree on the other side of the Swilly. The last gunners left the Fort in 1886 and the Fort is now a, very cool, private residence.
