Tullaghan Cross: This cross in Tullaghan, right on the Donegal/Leitrim border, has bit of an unknown origin. The cross has been dated as being from the 9th or 10th century and the local folklore says it mysteriously washed ashore from Donegal Bay one day after a storm. Another story says that it came from a monastery nearby, but the remains of such a monastery has not yet been found. The cross was erected on a hill in the village in 1778 as a 'market cross' as the law at the time allowed fairs to be held in towns with market squares that had crosses, spires or carved stones and the town wanted a market to compete with Ballyshannon.
