Pictures: Kilkenny chess whizz kids make all the right moves

The next generation of chess grand masters were in action when the inaugural Ficheall.ie Primary School Tournament was held in Kilkenny. READ MORE BELOW

The O’Loughlin Gaels GAA hall was the base as 136 children from nine schools from across Kilkenny and Carlow took part in a staggering 408 chess games on one day.

Chess is a growing pastime in Irish primary schools - more than 200 schools have now joined the Ficheall.ie network of teachers promoting chess in primary schools.

An excellent rainy day hobby for students, chess promotes a variety of social and cognitive skills - respect, forward planning and problem-solving as well as decision-making and accepting defeat. It helps players understand resilience and develop a growth mindset when exploring a new skill.

Chess courses
This summer Kilkenny Education Centre will be running chess courses for any teachers interested in learning the game and bringing the wonderful game of chess to their school.
