A successful night was had according to a member of the Brownie Gorman Patrick Phelan Sinn Féin Cumann.

About 60 people attended the launch in Clonaslee what is a former Church of Ireland chapel.

Damien Cannon introduced the speakers, who included Senator Maria McCormack, Andrew McCartney and the author.

Also in attendance were Laois councillors Aidan Mullins from the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District, who resigned from Sinn Féin last year, and independent Cllr Tommy Mulligan from the Portlaoise Municipal District.

Senator McCormack spoke to the Leinster Express / Laois Live afterwards.

“It was a privilege to take part in the launch of Our Martin by Jim McVeigh in Clonaslee. This book captures not just Martin McGuinness the political leader and statesman, but the family man — the human being behind the public role.

“Martin inspired a generation of republicans, including people like me, to step forward, serve our communities and continue the work he began. It was wonderful to welcome author Jim McVeigh and our dear friend Andrew McCartney back to Laois for such a meaningful occasion.

“The event reflected the deep connection our county has with Martin’s story and legacy. My thanks to Mountmellick Cumann for hosting a truly memorable evening. Martin led the way — it is now our responsibility to finish the work of Irish unity, peace and equality on this island,” Senator McCormack said.

Aaron Kelly of Laois Sinn Féin also commented.

“It was brilliant to see such a strong crowd come out to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin McGuinness. All proceeds go towards the Martin McGuinness Peace Foundation..”

Our Martin is a new book about the life of Martin McGuinness by veteran Irish republican and former political prisoner Jim ‘Flash’ McVeigh. Written with the co-operation of Martin’s family and many of his closest friends and comrades, the book gives an intimate insight into his early IRA activities, his family life and his role in the peace process, illustrated with 150 photos.
