Gardaí: Family of Clare man killed in Bunratty in 1984 ‘deserve to know’ what happened

The remains of Patrick Nugent were exhumed as part of a new investigation this Tuesday

An Garda Síochana have issued fresh appeals for anyone with information about the unexplained death of a Clare man in the 1980s , as his body is exhumed as part of a new investigation.

Patrick Nugent, 23, died in the early hours of February 11 1984 after he was found lying on the ground in a car park at Bunratty Folk Park.

His body has been exhumed this Tuesday morning, Sepetember 24, for a new post-mortem examination.

Speaking at a press conference following the exhumation, Inspector David Finnerty said Patrick’s family “deserve to know” what happened to him.

“The primary focus of this investigation is the victim Patrick Nugent and his family,” he said.

“Patrick’s family deserve to know, and to bring closure to what happened to Patrick on the night of the 10th/11th February 1984.

“I want to speak to any person who has any knowledge of the events that took place at The Barn, Bunratty Castle on the night of the 10/11th February 1984.

An investigation team, from within the Clare Garda division, has been established at Shannon garda station under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer.  The local Clare Divisional Investigation team is supported by the Serious Crime Review Team, Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
