Speaking to Derry Now at the 'Save Our Surgery' rally at Shantallow Health Centre, Derry City and Strabane District councillor Emmet Doyle (Aontú) described the Racecourse Medical practice as "under threat".
Cllr Doyle added: "One of the lead partners in the practice is retiring and the contract has been handed back to the Department of Health.
"Potentially, come June, if there is no remedy found, there could be up to five thousand patients in this area, which I serve, who won't have access to a GP.
"People have expressed to me about this situation. You can imagine in this centre there is care for children right up to older adults. There is not another surgery locally. There is going to be a massive impact if there is no resolution to this.
