Watch: Delight for Scoil Cholmcille’s aspiring filmmakers with a national award

Scoil Cholmcille has received recognition at the FÍS Film Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking Drama for a short movie produced by fourth and fifth-class students

Scoil Cholmcille is celebrating winning the Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking Drama at the  FÍS Film Awards.

The Letterkenny school’s fourth and fifth class students produced a short film titled  ‘The Award’ which won the judges over.

“The Award depicts a young Ukrainian girl, Zlata, coming to our school,” teacher Odhran McGowan, told DonegalLive. “She deals with the problems all children have to deal with trying to get a life and the journey in which she wins people over by showing them how nice she is through actions at the end of it she receives an award.

“It has been a fantastic journey for the children they have become better problem solvers, critical thinkers, investigators and team players. They have learned digital and communication skills along the way. It is just a fantastic competition, memories have been created that will last a lifetime.”

The students will now receive a plaque in recognition of their success and an iPad for future filmmaking projects. It was one of 20 nominated from around the country for the renowned contest, which features a host of short movies created by primary school children and their teachers across Ireland.

The FÍS Film Awards is a renowned annual competition for Irish primary school children and their teachers and educates them on the entire movie-making process.

Hosted by RTE’s Sinead Kennedy, the event is run by the Institute of Art, Design and Technology and Oide Technology in Education. First established as a grassroots initiative to nurture Ireland’s future moviemaking talent, over 1,500 pupils get involved yearly. The awards ceremony took place the the Helix at Dublin City University. 

The FÍS Film Awards see classes across the country challenged to write, direct, and produce their own short films for a chance to win a myriad of accolades and attend the prestigious awards ceremony. Whether it be script writing, acting, filming or costume design, students are encouraged to get creative both in and out of the classroom.
