WATCH: Laois woman stars in a powerful tribute to St Brigid

A poem and film written and conceived by Laois woman Laura Murphy as part of her Herstory Poet in Residence is central to the celebration of the first St Brigid's Day holidiay.

Herstory Poet-In-Residence Laura Murphy was inspired to write Is Mise  Bríd while working on their three year campaign to make Brigid’s Day a national holiday.

It features in a new film by Peter Martin and commissioned by Kildare County Council with Creative Ireland Kildare for Lá Fhéile Bríde 2022

It was shot on location at Kilkea Castle Athy, Newbridge Town Hall, The Wonderful Barn Leixlip, Co Kildare with additional footage from the GPO and Trinity College Dublin.

St Brigid's Day, February 1, was the festival of fertility and marked the beginning of spring in Ireland. It signalled an end to the darkness of winter and ushered in a new season of hope and growth. The first St Brigid's Day Public Holiday in Ireland takes place on Monday February 6.
