Watch: Base jumpers leap from RTE midland tower ahead of its demolition

A pair of base jumpers skydived from an RTE transmitter tower in Offaly on Thursday evening.

The parachutists scaled the 296 metre high tower near Tullamore, which is almost two and half times the height of the Spire in Dublin, and jumped shortly before 9pm.

They managed to avoid the wires holding the tower in place on their descent and landed in nearby fields.

The RTE Medium Wave transmitter is due to be demolished on Tuesday, July 25.

A familiar landmark to many in the Midlands, construction work began on the transmitter in late 1973. It went into service in the mid 70s before it was taken out of operation in 2008.
