WATCH: Laois kids steal the show during 3Arena gig with RTÉ concert orchestra

Portlaoise primary school students perform with the National Children's Choir

Ten primary school students from Laois have made their county proud through their fantastic performance on stage at the 3Arena.

Students at Holy Family Senior School in Portlaoise, under the direction of music coordinator and teacher Deirdre Meagher, took part in the National Children's Choir performance on January 4, 2026.

The event took place as a tribute to Phil Lynott, with performances from Eric Bell, Ricky Warwick, Marco Mendoza, Richard Fortus and Laurence Archer. The concert was hosted by radio presenter Dave Fanning.

"Our school has been involved in the National Children's Choir for years, even decades before the amalgamation when we were St. Paul's BNS," Ms Meagher told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

"Last year, all 5th and 6th class pupils took part in the NCC, totalling to approximately 350 pupils. We held two nights of concerts in our own hall and a select number of children were chosen to represent us in the National Concert Hall in May last year," the teacher explained.

"This year, we were contacted by the NCC committee, looking for 10 children from the choir to perform in the 3Arena as part of a Phil Lynott dedication night, alongside the RTÉ concert orchestra.

After auditions, chance selections and permission from the parents, ten lucky children were chosen to represent the school.

"There were 150 children in total from all schools involved with the Cór na nÓg, who performed at the 3Arena," Ms Delaney said.

The choir coordinator taught her Portlaoise students two songs; 'Sarah' and 'The Boys are Back in Town'.

"The parents brought their children up to the 3Arena, while and myself and another teacher, Ms. Wynne went to support and supervise students on the night. Ms Wynne's son Sean was one of the lucky ten students," the teacher explained.

"It was a fantastic performance, and what an experience for them to be on stage with a 45 piece orchestra!" she said.

"The school is incredibly proud of their behaviour, talents and professionalism both on and off the stage. Their future is bright!" Ms Delaney finished.

Well done to students at Holy Family Senior School Portlaoise!
